THE SILENT SHOPPER SCAM, Fraudster’s Favorite
HOW IT WORKS: This scam is designed like so many others. By USPS Mail (in our case) or some other carrier, you receive a flat mailer. Inside there’s a check and an instruction letter.
That’s your compensation for doing some anonymous shopping. BUT WAIT, THERE’S LESS! Well gosh oh gee, they slipped up and sent you an additional $2,000! That’s easy they say. Just use (one of your own) credit cards to buy gift cards as a silent shopper. The scam continues with one way or the other that you are then to mail the gift cards to them while the $2,450 is safely in you own check-ing account. Of course, the upshot is that they get four or five gift cards while your bank refuses to post the worthless instrument that they sent you. And you could have your bank close all of your accounts and send you packing!
I may have the details mixed up, but the general idea is exactly what I’ve described. You are on the hook for a couple grand and the scammers have about the same in gift cards.
KNOW THIS: No legitimate business will ever ask you for gift cards. If you receive a check that you weren’t aware of, and it’s from an entity unknown to you, for work you haven’t been contracted to do, don’t do a thing! Call the FBI and give them the your materials, including the mailer.
Good Luck!
