Public Art at The Tower by Stephen B Whatley

Tower Hill Underpass, the main entrance portal to the Tower of London, from Tower Hill Station in the city of London.

In 1999, expressionist painter Stephen B Whatley (1965-) was commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces to paint a series of 30 oil paintings depicting the history and icons of the Tower of London - a mammoth project which he accomplished in 8 months in 2000.

In 2001 the original works of art, owned by the Tower of London, were then reproduced on steel vitreous enamel panels lining this permanent show of public art; photographed here in 2008.

Stephen's work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions since 1988, including showings at London's National Theatre, the ICA, the Lloyd's Building & London's Olympia. In 2013 he donated his art to a London charity art auction and raised funds for the Joss Searchlight Children's Cancer Charity.

His work has been published in many publications including the London Times, the New York Times, HELLO! magazine & TIME.

The work of Stephen B Whatley is in numerous private collections in Denmark, England, Germany, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, USA & Wales; & public collections including BBC Heritage, the Royal Collection, the London Transport Museum, & the Carrollton School of The Sacred Heart, Miami, USA.
