Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) - famed for its musical extravaganzas - is 100 years old in 2024. It was said in its 1940s and 1950s heyday it contained more stars than there are in heaven.
Also, 100 years ago, one of its contract players, actor, Jeff Richards was born; pictured in a new cartoon tribute by artist Stephen B. Whatley. A former baseball player, he is most remembered as one of the brothers in the vibrant wacky musical comedy film, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers ( MGM 1954).
His career petered out after the mid-1960s and he lived his later years in poor health and on disability benefits in a trailer park in San Bernadino CA; passing at 64.
Jeff Richards also co-starred in Born Reckless (1958) starring glamorous Mamie Van Doren; whose memoirs ‘Secrets of the Goddess’ Whatley has illustrated with his cartoon illustrations, due for publication in 2025.
