St. Paul's From The South Bank. 1991 by Stephen B. Whatley

A view of the City of London painted in 1991 by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley, inspired by drawings made on location on there South Bank of The Thames. The oil painting was purchased by collectors over 20 years ago and the artist was happy to be able to visit the owners of the work recently, to photograph it digitally.

The painting was published in March 1992 in The Artist magazine in a beautiful feature entitled 'The Landscape as Background', by Robin Stemp; exploring both historical and contemporary paintings. Ms Stemp wrote: "…in Stephen B. Whatley's 'St Paul's From The South Bank' the coloured ground around the main subject is an extension of the yellow which makes up the cathedral. Our imagination is called into play and it is possible to 'see' a hot bright day with limpid shadows along the river and a high sun energetically heating the city below. In its golden beauty it is reminiscent of London on a Sunday when the city is in a temporary lull. In both this and the portrait of Valerie Singleton (also featured) the artist shows his mastery of the art of colours and emotional alchemy which can be made from using it with sensitivity and passion…"

The dome of St. Paul's Cathedral is an iconic symbol of permanence, especially since it survived the bombing of London during World War II; and features in several of Whatley's paintings of London - more of which can be seen here on Flickr and on his website.

The work of Stephen B. Whatley, which has been published in TIME magazine, is in private collections worldwide; in public collections including BBC Heritage, The Royal Collection of HM Queen Elizabeth II, London Transport Museum, Newman University & Westminster Cathedral; and his series of 30 paintings commissioned by the Tower of London are permanently reproduced throughout Tower Hill Underpass, outside Tower Hill Station, London - along the river, west of this view.
