Stephen Rees says: This pub, built long after the war (which destroyed the previous pub of the same name) has now been itself replaced by a block of flats. The British no longer go to pubs very much, buying cheaper beer from supermarkets and drinking it in front of the tv at home.

Stephen Rees says: This loco used to work on the London, Tilbury and Southend lines before electrification. They not only *looked* very impressive, their performance on a very busy commuter route was outstanding. Though I seem to recall quite a hit of wheel slip on starting. This loco is now featured twice in this gallery but I make no apology for that!

Stephen Rees says: By 1973 I had been long gone from Nottingham. But I want to take credit for the Central Area Service. As a student, under the direction of Sylvia Trench, I conducted a study of the feasibility of connecting Nottigham's multiple bus stations to the railway station. The timing and route was pretty srtraightforward but the real innovation was operating Fare Free. My idea was that this would demonstrate the need for the service, after which fares could be introduced that did not have too much effect on ridership. Free fares lasted a lot longer than that!

Stephen Rees says: The 150 replaced the 147 on Sundays. So therefore a good long ride out in to the country. Thanks to the Green Belt legislation that wasn't too far away. This is Lamborne End but I the outer destination I recall was Chigwell Row Maypole Inn. In East Ham it turned around at the White Horse.

Stephen Rees says: The 25 ran along Romford Road, and we used it when we stayed at my Nan's in Manor Park. RTLs were retired earlier than RTs as they were non-standard. The bodies could be switched between both types of chassis. The 25 never went to Blackwall Tunnel.

Stephen Rees says: I know that I could detect the difference of engine note between Leyland and AEC at quite a young age. And it is entirely possible that some of these might have been on the 101. The 20A was a route I used quite often: the 20 went straight on from Loughton to Epping. The 20A turned right for Debden (as shown here). I would have got on at Wanstead - but I think they went further south than that.

Stephen Rees says: Trains of this class operated from both Victoria and London Bridge to my Nan's at Cheam. In seventies I was a commuting from Staines to Waterloo - but 4SUBs did linger on inner suburban work as well.

Stephen Rees says: There is no date on this image - but I do recall crossing to France on one of these. I suspect it would have been when I was no longer in my childhood. Yes it was much faster than a ferry - but you could not see anything out of the windows due to the spray coming up from the skirts. It was also very noisy indeed.

Stephen Rees says: We went on one of these buses one Christmas to visit family who lived near Stoke-on-Trent. We managed to bag the front seats on the top deck. The weather was awful - and the condensation on inside of the windows was actually freezing. My Beano got stuck to it. I do not recall if the hostess was working on those trips.
