Rent a bike!
Bicycles are everywhere in Amsterdam. The City prioritizes bicycling over any other form of transportation. On our second day in Amsterdam, we rented bicycles from Black Bikes (across the street from the Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark) for 24 hours at a whopping cost of 10 euros (including helmet rental). This was one of the best things we did on our entire trip. We cycled to the Rijksmuseum and roamed through its gardens, which are free. We continued our self-guided cycling tour and cruised through Vondelpark on our way to Rembrandtpark.
Unlike Vondelpark which had winding lanes, numerous weeping willows, and lush open lawns for sunbathing, Rembrandpark was must less "manicured" in a way that made it feel like you were cycling through a forest. The cycling path was narrow and slightly bumpy, but the park itself was fantastic. While there were a few public art pieces to look at as we cycled, a majority of the park was simply wooded expanse. We exited Rembrandtpark and headed toward the City's largest park, Amsterdamse Bos.
When in Amsterdam rent a bike! Even if you have not ridden a bicycle in years (me!), you CAN bike in Amsterdam. Do not let yourself be intimidated by all of the other cyclists or their mastery of cycling etiquette. Pedal with confidence and mind the traffic rules and you will be absolutely fine!
