Timberdeck:

This is a example of what happens when some simple rules for timber protection by design not been applied. The all so lovely moss helps to keep the timber wet at all time and decay is accelerated. Cuts should never be covered (board at the front) The design must always allow the timber to dry where wet. Paints and oil are also not recommended. You only end up with a patchy deck or wetness cannot escape and rot starts underneath.
