I replaced our aging Asus RT-N16 router with a shiny new Netgear R7800 this weekend. The first step was wiping the proprietary firmware and replacing it with OpenWRT free/open firmware. It's a little more trouble to configure than the Tomato firmware I ran on the Asus but it's got a much larger and more active dev community. So far, I'm loving it. I've configured a dedicated radio for our TV and media hardware and another for phones, tablets, and computers. I also have a VPN set up for my bitcoin node. It plays nice with FIOS and the bandwidth increase greatly improved streaming HD and 4k video quality.
