The Huia was a two-masted topsail schooner built at Aratapu, on the Wairoa River by James Barbour and launched in 1894 at Kaipara Harbour, New Zealand. The Huia was constructed from kauri and puriri timbers and commenced regular trade runs between New Zealand and Australia, primarily transporting timber and coal and gained a reputation for fast crossings. In 1912 she was sold to the Nobel Explosives Company of Glasgow who installed an auxiliary 160-horsepower Beardmore engine in 1922. By 1925, under Captain T.H.E. Lane, it was trading wood but explosives between New Zealand, Melbourne and Queensland. In 1948 Imperial Chemical Industries replaced her with the Taranui on the Australia - New Zealand run. In 1950 she was brought by a New Zealand group trading as the Huia Trading Company for Pacific Island trading. On 26 January 1951, while under the command of Captain S Neale, she was wrecked on the Komekane Reef about 40 miles SE of Noumea, New Caledonia.
