Shirley Winter, Double Bay, Sydney, July 1954
Shirley Winter (nee Ross) of Double Bay is performing a task with her feet that many find difficult to do with their hands. Winter lost the use of her hands after a bout of polio as a young child in 1924, but she managed to conquer many of her personal challenges. At school she was encouraged to try to use her hands, but still had to write with a pen or pencil in her mouth. Pix magazine photographed some of her remarkable accomplishments, which included doing all the household cooking, typing and even winding a watch — all with her toes.
