Public Library of New South Wales, 1948, by unknown photographer

This building was opened in 1942 and now houses the Mitchell Library. The Public Library of NSW (now the State Reference Library) is housed in an adjoining wing opened in 1988. The State Reference Library has origins dating back to 1826 with the foundation of the Australian Subscription Library.

 

The Mitchell LIbrary was officially opened on 8 March 1910, and opened to the public the next day, 9 March.
