Space Construction Mech

Thank you so much to Fourbrickstall for sending me this set as part of the Studshooters Space Adventure Challenge :)

For my first attempt at this assignment I tried taking outdoor shots while visiting the White Mountains in New Hampshire, USA. For these photos I first climbed halfway up a mountain (elevation 4000 ft) to get a scenic overlook, and later went into the woods in search of boulders, mossy landscapes, and small caves.

I liked these images, but they didn't feel super "spacey" to me, so I did another set indoors back at home in Portland, Maine the following week. For the indoor photos I tried to match the purple and orange in the Lego set by using purple lighting and orange "fall foliage" from a local hobby shop.

Since the theme of this Lego set seemed to be "mining for space gems" I used mineral-rich rocks and crystals from around our house (my kids bring home a LOT of rocks) to create the setting of these images. I also used a mist machine to make "smoke" and create a bit of atmosphere.

Finally, I edited everything in photoshop; putting stars into the sky, adding a bit of glow to the gems, motion blur to create movement, and removing support wires to help a few characters float/fly.

Shooting this small set was a fun challenge, and a nice change-of-pace from some of my more minifig-centric Lego photography. I enjoyed trying to find (and create) various settings where I thought this set would make sense. Hope you enjoy the photos!
