Dolman Theatre 2619

Dolman Theatre, Newport, Wales. Established in 1924, the Newport Playgoers Society operated from a converted church hall until that building was required for the Kingsway development. As part of the deal a new theatre, the Dolman, was constructed as part of the development in 1967 - making this year their 50th anniversary. It was designed by the architectural practice of Shoolheifer & Burley. The auditorium is at 1st floor level and has a very spacious foyer / bar. It seats 400 on a single well raked level, has an orchestra pit and a 40ft x 32ft stage with a counterweight grid in the fly tower. There is also a 60 seat studio theatre. It was initially equipped as a cinema, one of the first of the regional BFI venues, and the build cost was estimated as £190,000.
