Backstage Arts 6261

Arts Theatre, Great Newport Street, London. The rear of the block (theatre roof on left) all of which is down for redevelopment.

Opened in 1927, a partially converted from an existing building by P Morley Horder, the theatre was later altered to the design of Basil Ionides (1934) and reconstructed after a serious fire in 1951. It is scheduled for closure and demolition as the majority of the north side of Great Newport Street is redeveloped, probably starting in 2017. The theatre will however be replaced, with a larger capacity auditorium, but lacking the flytower.
