The Theosophical Church
The Theosophical Society was founded by an expatriate, Annie Besant in 1875. The society that was started in Chennai, spread within a short time to the whole sub-continent and beyond. The society is located along the Adyar River. The primary objective of the society was to revive the Hindu culture that had been badly ravaged by the colonial rule.
The campus of the society is lush with vegetation. An important feature in the campus is the huge banyan tree that covers some 40,000 sq. ft.
The campus has a library that has a rich collection of rare manuscripts on all major faiths. There are also a number of residential houses, prayer houses of the Hindus, Jains, Christians and Buddhists. The Church in the campus is one of the key attractions.
