With The Love Chicken at the 2010 Lake County (Illinois) Fair
This poor hen in the petting zoo was clearly tired of being mauled by kids and wanted protection from an adult because, when I squatted down to pet a baby pig, the chicken ran over and cuddled up to me (I have no illusions that the chicken was merely affectionate, liked me and wanted to be held). I sat down, she sat on my lap for a long time ... until some kids grabbed at her. She popped up and ran over to Mona and cuddled with Mona for a long time ... until some other kids grabbed at her. She (the hen, not Mona) fled in terror after giving Mona a hard peck in the ribs ("How dare you not protect me??"). Wish I could've taken that chicken home ...
