St. Petersburg's Piers
In 1854, Lieutenant C.H. Berryman began the long tradition of pier construction in St. Petersburg, with a short pier near present-day 5th Avenue North. Over the next 150 years many other piers have come and gone in St. Petersburg.
In 1889, the Railroad Pier, completed by the Orange Belt Railway, was added.
In 1896, the Brantley Pier was constructed at present-day 2nd Avenue North.
In 1901, the first area tourist attraction opened at Tomlinson's Pier - the Fountain of Youth.
In 1906, the Electric Pier, known for its many electric lights, opens.
In 1907, the Braf Pier opened on homestead land for private recreation.
In 1913, the first Municipal Pier opened.
From 1926-1967, the Million Dollar Pier served as the city's gathering place until its demolition.
In 1973, the inverted pyramid at The Pier opened as the city sought to renew its identity in a modern age.
