Junior Pin Feathers

One cold very windy morning in mid January, I was surprised to see this young male Costa's hummingbird occupying the favorite perches near my feeders previously jealously guarded by an adult male Costa's in full breeding plumage seen in previous pictures here.

 

This young guy's gorget is just emerging, while previous small patches of it above and below his beak seem to be moldering away.
