Urquhart Castle has a long and violent history, as might be expected from such a strategically placed fortification. Most interestingly to me (as I didn't know this before visiting this time), it was destroyed and abandoned by its owners on government orders - this was the 1690s in the run up to the Jacobite rebellion.
In later years the castle and its surrounds have been a favourite spot for Nessie-spotting, possibly because the deepest part of the loch is nearby, but probably because it is a romantic location and therefore highly suitable.
The visitor centre and general experience was very good, I have to say. The hot chocolate in their restaurant is delicious too.
