They say “one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure”. As such, even useless by-products of the hot dip galvanizing manufacturing process can be considered as artwork. The injection of wet HNx gas into the snout of a galvanizing line to supress the formation of zinc vapour via the formation of a barrier surface oxide on a molten zinc surface, results in microscopic structures ranging from coarse and fine ZnO needles, irregular icosahedric & raspberry shaped ZnO, intermetallic Fe2Al5Znx dross particles and spherical Iron oxide inclusions entrained in filamentous ZnO “snout dust” contamination. To maximise surface quality for Tata Steel Strip Product’s premier Full Finish product, these wonderful structures must be eradicated in their entirety through the introduction of novel and innovative industrial processing techniques.
