Growing Squares Series

The goal of this project was to incorporate five squares on a 6"x8" picture plane. A couple of obstacles to overcome were to not overwhelm the white ground and to have an appealing composition within the picture plane; to not just have the squares appear to be thrown on the plane.

The growing squares series has a theme of movement throughout the panels. The first panel, the small squares, initially don't appear to have much movement due to quite the static nature, but the fourth square up rebels against the other squares by shifting its angle and by drifting away from the stable squares. The medium squares evoke thoughts of something straining under weight or the movement of a Slinky toy - there is a tension in the movement. The large squares are like a traffic jam gone awry - the top and bottom squares are smashed together while the middle one is just being touched by them. This traffic-jam-gone-awry-feel causes overwhelming feelings of a chaotic movement.
