Coming Together
Today I have chosen my painting called Coming Together for our theme Working Towards a Better World. I painted it with the idea of encouraging people through art to think about being more tolerant, curious, concerned, and caring of others. I wish to encourage people to realize that we are all made of the same organs, even if our features and makeup are somewhat different we can enjoy, respect, and savor our differences. By choosing not to discriminate but by joining together we can make a difference. Diversity is the spice of life.
My painting is done in acrylics on a large loose canvas, hopefully giving one the feeling of working and playing together in harmony.
I asked my daughter, Karen Lewis, to collaborate with me on this, she looked at my painting and this is the beautiful poem she wrote for it:
COMING TOGETHER
Asian, Latin, European, African,
Native, Indigenous, Foreign, Alien,
Descriptions that fall short,
vague splotches on the canvas of life.
All have but one heart that beats,
blood is but one color.
Flesh and Features, each unique
Organs and muscles, identical.
Each face a work of art
each mark distinctively its own.
The beauty of our differences
far surpasses mere mortal comprehension.
Each unmatched culture,
its own vibrant combination of colors and sounds,
the pulsing of a nation, a people.
These different beats unite,
to make the music of our world.
As each exceptional voice blends with the other,
the harmony of humanity rises
high above the dark clouds of oppression and ignorance.
North, South, East, West,
a baby's cry is but the same.
The pang of hunger and indifference
changes not with skin color.
In the ears of every mother and father
every sister and brother
the cries of oppression should ring loud.
A call to action, a call to save our human family.
Our differences are but brush strokes on this canvas,
each unique in shape and color
when viewed together.....
form the masterpiece of mankind.

We have so much to learn in this world and we wanted to make a difference in a very small way.
Once again I so appreciate your visit today. I hope that your day and night are filled with love, friendship, and success.
