The Brazos Railroad Drawbridge

The Brazos Railroad Drawbridge spans the Napa River a few miles from where I live in southern Napa County, California. People (including me) used to be able to walk out on it – most to fish, but some of us with our cameras. You have to walk about a mile to get to it, so there were never big crowds. Sometime in the past couple of years the rail company put up no trespassing signs and security cameras, so the fishermen are all gone.

This is a vertical lift drawbridge, so that tall structure isn’t just to support the bridge – it is a mechanism to lift then entire railroad bed up to allow boats through and then lower it when trains are scheduled.
