Aspect Ratio. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image)
To get the right proportions when cropping a photo, you can (in photoshop) choose the rectangular marquee, and in Style click on the arrow and choose Fixed Ratio. There you can put in the exact numbers.
To do a wide screen size with black borders:
The aspect ratio for wide screen is 16:9. In Fixed Ratio put 16 in width and 9 in height. Drag the marquee box on the photo the way you want to crop it. (Image - Crop)
Then go to Image - Canvas size and make the height f.x c.a the same as the width.
(don´t thange the widht size at all!!!) belove in Canvas extension color, choose black. and then OK.
Now you have a picture with black borders on top and bottom of the photo.
Find the exact centre of the photo with a horizontical guide line. (the guide line can snap )
Then go to the rectangular marquee, in fixed ratio put 4 in width and 3 in height ( 4:3 is the ratio you see on the non widescreen t.v)
then drag a marquee that is as wide as the photo, make it snap on the centered guide and crop. Voilá!
You got your own movie sceen : )
