Contactless Payment Vending Machine, Meguro Station, Tokyo
The Suica system, a contactless payment system that allows consumers to buy things using contactless smart cards for payment, is currently being used on the JR East network, Tokyo Monorail, and Rinkai Line of the Japanese railway system. It was deployed beginning in November 2001. Cards can be used for access to the train system as well as for purchases from some vending machines, as shown here.
