Benefits of going out shoeless?

From quite often going out without shoes on, most commonly in my socks, I have had plenty of time while walking to ponder over what people may think at times about it, and to – inside my head – makes excuses and reasons to justify myself enjoying and preferring to go out without shoes on. Not that anyone ever has a problem with it, or commented or asked questions about it, but there are definitely some benefits of going shoeless. I wanted to share them below. You’re welcome to add more if you know of any!

- Walking barefoot, or in socks, through soil or along dirt roads seems to be effective at drying out your feet – good for those who have damp feet. Soil seems to have an anti-bacterial function that soaks up moisture and leaves feet feeling dry for a couple of days afterwards. Good for people who are stuck in shoes a lot.

- Walking outdoors barefoot, or in socks, has a massaging effect that stimulates your nerves (most nerve endings are in your feet). Many parks in Asia have an area of smooth stones sealed into the concrete for people to walk over as it is presumed to have general health benefits. Why not enjoy it in the midst of nature rather than in a park?

- Daring to be different, for example being out in barefoot or socks, is also mentally beneficial. By feeling comfortable being exposed to others while appearing to be different offsets some sort of self-confidence in the long run. People generally respect those who are comfortable to be different - if you keep it within reasonable taste!

- Being able to enjoy the Earth you’re standing on is a forgotten joy and freedom. The Earth supports us; it supports everything! Nature’s trees and animals flourish because of it. It is a massive force lying beneath us, and much under-appreciated. We should take the time to feel it, while absorbing some its strength and energy. Everyone feels relaxed when being surrounded by nature, so why not make contact with it?

- You get to take home footprints that map where you have been! It’s like having a more personal version of a photograph or postcard!
