La Bourse, Stock Exchange, Brussels, Belgium
Excerpt from the plaque:
The Stock Exchange
Built between 1868 and 1873 and designed by architect L.P. Suys, the Stock Exchange is a part of the city's renewal and embellishment plan. In those years, this impressive building met an essential need: to create a centre where rapidly expanding commercial activities could be handled. The building, an interesting combination of grandeur and fantasy, is located at the spot where the old butter Market used to stand, a market which was established on the remains of the old convent of the Recollets. This eclectic building mixes elements from the French Neo-Renaissance and the Second Empire Style, with lush ornaments and scultptures by a few renowned artists like A. Rodin.
