Sportsmanship Under Surveillance, Pan Am Path Art Relay, Toronto, ON

Excerpt from the information boards (from Top Left Clockwise):

The Survival Guide for Demonstrators by Jota Castro: The Guide consisted of a printed newspaper, including images and information with practical tips and reasons for which to demonstrate in the cities of Brussels, Istanbul, Havana, London, Dakar, Bilbao, Jeremie, and Treviso. Unfortunately those same reasons and context have not changed in the past twelve years, and today the artist not only offers a very similar take on events, but also invites us to provide reasons to demonstrate in Toronto.

The Freedom Fighter Manual by Juan Ortiz-Apuy: The manual is a 17-page document designed by the CIA in 1983, airdropped over Nicaragua with the goal of overthrowing the elected government. It contained a series of instructions for public disobedience and revolt, from ripping the pages out of books in public libraries, to how to make incendiary or Molotov bombs. Each page of the manual is silkscreened with glow-in-the-dark ink and set against 3 motion-sensor security lights. As you walk in, the lights are triggered and the content of the manual becomes invisible. You must stand perfectly still for a few seconds in order to view the piece. Juan Ortiz-Apuy explores levels of state intervention and imposed policies implemented for decades in the name of national security.

Performance ID Cards by Minerva Cuevas, Mejor Vida Corp.: Minerva Cuevas founded Mejor Vida Corp (Better Life Corporation) in 1998, an enterprise that provides free products and services such as international student ID cards, subway passes, lottery tickets and barcode stickers which reduce the price of food at supermarket chains. Cuevas assumes the role of political and artistic agent defying trends of control and subordination.

Eye Charts by Marcos Ramirez Erre: A series of print editions that attempt to assess the level of comprehension by correctly identifying the messages displayed on the Snellen Chart, which is traditionally used to measure visual activity. In his artist statement ERRE implies that “each quote is chosen by its ideological alignment and tries to compel the viewer to assume a position, to question his or her own alignment in relation to the significance of the quote.”
