"Coccolithophores with their bacterial community" by Sophie Zweifel, ETH Zurich

This image was taken using a scanning electron microscope with a through-the-lens detector, and (false) colored by Roberto Pioli from our lab. It is an image of a type of marine phytoplankton (coccolithophore) and its associated bacterial microbiome. These organisms are essential to the marine ecosystem and thus we seek to understand how their interactions with bacteria shape their behavior and impact. This image I think not only captures these algal-bacterial associations but conveys the beauty of the microscopic world.
