"Metallographic analysis of martensitic steel weld" by Indira Dey, ETH Zurich

The image shows a cross section of a weld of martensitic steel. Creating a cross-sectional image is as individual as an finger print. Several steps are necessary to reveal this unique print. The weld wasl sawed, ground, polished and finally etched. With every step there is a danger of damaging the beauty of the image. You can have scratches, overetching or process error such pores. Every cross section looks different and you cannot reproduce the same picture. Even the same sample looks different over time. The picture was taken with light microscopy on the day of etching. The image is so special for me because it shows a perfect weld (symmetric) without any defects (pores) and reveals the special microstructure of martensitic steel (needles). I think it shows what kind of effort and beauty is behind everyday technologies such as welding which you can find in nearly parts made of steel.
