Cleft lip and palate malformations affect one in 500 newborns. In the first year of life, the form and function is surgically restored. To document the complex 3-dimensional anatomy in infants, we implemented a novel approach with latest technology by means of contactless scanning. This 3-dimensional scans allow the production of pre-surgical aids (palatal plates), but also the research and quantification of growth of the affected structures. The heterogeneity and complexity of the malformations shown reflects the challenges faced by surgeons in clinical research to improve the treatment of the children entrusted to our hands.

Cleft lip with nose deformities and different expressions of hard and soft palate clefts are visualized. Further complex unilateral and bilateral complete clefts of lip and palate are 3-dimensionally documented. We show the interesting variability of different cleft lip and palate malformations in newborns.
