Quay House, Old Portsmouth

QUAY HOUSE

(formerly Wightlink House)

The original Art Deco building was built in 1930s as an office, but during the Second World War in June 1944 was used as the D-Day Einbarkation Area Headquarters for Portsmouth. It had the role of co-ordinating the loading of troops onto the ships at the four main Portsmouth embarkation sites. One of these sites was nearby at Camber Quay.

Due to the number of Allied troops involved on D-Day. it took several days to load them onto the ships and landing craft that would take them to Normandy, which was the result of a huge amount of planning.
