Hailes Abbey_07
All that remains of a once magnificent Cistercian Abbey (thanks again, Henry VIII), Hailes Abbey is set in wonderfully calm rural surroundings near to Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. Dating from 1246 A D, the Abbey was founded by the Duke of Cornwall as a 'thanksgiving' after being saved from death at sea.The Abbey was closed by Henry VIII during the 'Dissolution of the Monasteries" in 1539. Dereliction ensued until the Tracy family turned what remained into a 'family home' for a number of years.
