Don't Mind If I Do

I’m working on a series of hummingbird pictures using a setup I explain in my previous post. If you're interested in this kind of photography, I included enough detail there for you to try it yourself. Here, I was taking shots of these wonderful flowers, when this hummingbird just barged in and said, "Don't mind if I do!" And if you believe that...

Someone asked me if I had tried a flash to stop the movement of the birds I’m shooting. In answer to it, I've got an excellent flash that would do just that... but what I'm after is the exact opposite of that. What I'm attempting to do here is to express the dynamics of their movement and a zone of sharpness because that's how we truly see them. Ironically my newsfeed this morning featured an article of “stunning” hummingbird photos. Other than the birds’ colorful plumage, the photos of them were all static and still, with nothing truly stunning about them at all from my perspective as a photographer. There was no art nor expressiveness to them. A camera set up with a flash and an intervalometer could have taken any of them, yet beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as is said.

I’ve gotten a series of images, all quite unalike, showing not just the beauty of these creatures, but also the speed, the acrobatics, and the expressiveness of them. Beauty cannot be judged objectively, for what one person finds beautiful or admirable may not appeal to another… that applies to me as well. Any beholders out there? I’d be happy to hear your opinion.
