"Castle on the hill"
Framlingham Castle has been passed through many hands and seen numerous architectual modifactions during its long history.
Built in the 12th century by Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, it was home to the dukes of Norfolk for over 400 years.
It was later owned by the first woman to be named a duchess in her own right and in the 16th century it became the scene of a national drama for the battle for the crown of England between Mary Tudor and Lady Jane Grey. Having fled London to her well fortified castle at Framlingham. there on 12 July 1553, Mary assembled her supporters. As her support grew, 0n 19 July the Privy Council unanimously agreed to proclaim Mary as queen . She was officially crowned in the folllowing October as Queen Mary I, the first queen of England.
Despite its history the castle is probably better known currently from the Ed Sheeran hit song "Castle on the hill". Although he was born in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, Ed was brought up and educated in Framlingham and still has his home there.
The Castle is owned and managed by English Heritage.
