This school was titled "Old Stone School" according to the 1954 Michigan Department of Conservation Map; and indicating it was still in use.
The town of Bard was settled in 1890. From 1902-1907, Bard had a post office. Bard was a trading post for bartering between fur buyers and Indians until the late 1890's. There was an operating lumber camp, saw mill and shingle mill as late as 1905 (along the Tobacco River). Bard also had its own barrel and hoop factory.
The first school was built in 1893 and later replaced by the structure that is pictured here.
