Starry Night Over the Ruins of the MacVane House

Some nice star trails under a nearly full moon. The moon (out of frame and mostly behind the camera) provided some very nice natural lighting of the chimneys, other stonework, and landscape here. I was still able to capture some nice star trails despide the bright moon. Shot with a Canon 6D and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens. This is a stack of 157 exposures each at 30 sec f/4.5 ISO 400 for a total of 78.5 seconds. The fireplaces were illuminated with LED candles.

Kamala Venkatesh joined me to shoot moonrise here. Our original plan was to shoot the moon rising over the chimneys, but the moon just didn't line up well. Then we decided to stick around and shoot these star trails instead.

The property is owned by the County of San Diego with oversight and/or management by other preservation organizations, has changed hands many times. In 1893, it was owned by John MacVane. Dr. George Brace purchased the property but deeded it to his wife, Marta Oatman Brace, in 1932. It was around this timeframe that the Craftsman-style house was built, partially by locally-sourced stones. Marta Brace sold the property to James and Barbara Hollis in 1946 and they sold the property to Walter and Geraldine Nass in 1951. Adnan Derbas purchased the beautiful home overlooking Lake Hodges from the Nass family and his son still lived on the property when it was destroyed by the 1997 Del Dios Fire.
