Collision in Bedford c 1961 2-6-2 Tank crushes Karrier Gamecock Refuse lorry.
A newpaper cutting which has been in my childhood railway scrapbook ever since. PMJ93 looks like a Karrier refuse truck owned by the Borough of Bedford .The registation dates from November 1955. The location of the accident was the branch line between Bedford and Sandy at Barkers Lane, near the power station. The locomotive is a Stanier 2-6-4 Tank of the 42xxx series. 2 or 3 cylinders. 425xx or 424xx. Number ends with a 4. Possibly 42524 or 42424 There was a lever crossing over the railway leading I think to an old gravel pit used for dumping rubbish.
I recall the long lines of coal trucks at the Goldington Power station on the Ouse, and the Nottingham area 2-8-0 Stanier engines which brought the coal there. Not far east of here was a signal box where tokens were handed to the DMU drivers for the single line stretch towards Sandy.
