161/365: No

Monday, 03 November 2008.

Two bright orange ear plugs sit atop the headboard of my bed. They are my husband's. He keeps them there because I've just developed a bit of a snore over the last couple of years after a lifetime of quiet sleep. They represent to me the commitment we made to love one another and walk with one another on our journey together through this life, come what may, good and bad.

Tonight, on the eve of election day, I wonder if the voters of California will see fit to let stand the marriages of thousands of their fellow citizens (as if it were not already a gut punch to know that others get to vote on the validity of your marriage). It is sobering to know that so many people are going to sleep tonight, curled in the loving embrace of their spouses, not knowing if their marriages will still exist tomorrow. I cannot imagine the aching fear that must follow them to sleep tonight.

I expect tomorrow to be a thrilling, joyous, and historic day. How far we have come! I only hope that it will not be tempered with the heartbreak of knowing that, as we take one step forward, we continue to slide backward.
