Gorilla: Helen 1 (Benga)
This is a tribute to Helen, the 3rd oldest gorilla in North America.
The chart shows Helen's grandchildren born to her daughter Benga, and her great-grandchildren. Not in the chart are her great-great-grandchildren, sired by Mshindi and born to Nne Kizazi, Tufani and Kwisha.
Helen was born in the wild, and in June 1960 arrived at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo where she gave birth to three daughters, fathered by three different males. In March 2002 she moved to Louisville where she now lives with Demba, another old female gorilla. This year (2014) she will celebrate her 56th birthday.
Color Key - Black: males, red: females. Arrows - Pointing from parents to their offspring.
This chart is based on the interactive online Gorilla Studbook by James R. Davis and the official International Studbook, published by Frankfurt Zoo. — If you find a mistake, please let me know!
