Hurricane Katrina [Family]
This is Debra and her beautiful grandbaby Aaliya. Aaliya was born on August 19, 2005, less than two weeks before Katrina hit. Today is her one-month birthday.
Debra is currently at Reliant Arena with her two sons, her daughter (Aaliyah's mother), her sister (with her two kids), and her mother.
Debra gets teary-eyed when she talks about the heirlooms and memorables that she lost in the storm (her husband passed away in 1995), but she also says that there was nothing more important than protecting her "grandbaby" while still in New Orleans. She said that the family stuck together to get through the ordeal. When they finally arrived in Houston, Aaliyah got a clean bill of health from the doctors. They are currently waiting to be moved into an apartment.
