Perched on the rim of the canyon, the Watchtower reflects the architecture of the ancestral Puebloans in the Four Corners region. Climb the stairs for views up and down the canyon. On a clear day, one can see well over 100 miles. Desert View Watchtower is a 0.4 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Grand Canyon, Arizona that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking and is accessible year-round.
What is the Desert View Watchtower made of? The structure is composed of a circular coursed masonry tower rising from a rubble base. The base was intentionally designed to convey a partly ruinous appearance, perhaps of an older structure on which the watchtower was later built. Near the eastern edge of Grand Canyon National Park, where the Colorado River begins to turn north and the Painted Desert stretches toward the Navajo and Hopi Reservations, a 70-foot-tall circular stone structure perched on the South Rim draws visitors’ attention. What at first glance appears to be an ancient Native American ruin, made with reddish sandstone, this tallest structure on the South Rim is actually a well-planned, relatively modern building that architect Mary Colter designed for the Fred Harvey Company.

Why was the Desert View Watchtower built? Perched on the edge of the south rim, what appears to be an ancient Native American ruin is actually the Desert View Watchtower, which was designed in 1932 by Mary Colter to overlook the eastern end of Grand Canyon National Park. She investigated ancient Puebloan ruins, and dabbled in learning about Hopi culture.
