Winter Night

Last week, I was snowshoeing up a hill above a mountain pass in central Switzerland in search of a perfect deepscape alignment.

 

My deep space gear, consisting of a tripod, mount, counterweight, battery pack, the astro camera, a 70-200mm lens and my autoguider with a guidescope made my backpack rather heavy. The hike was not very long, but I was hating myself for also squeezing in my regular nightscape equipment with DSLR, 24mm lens and tracker and for strapping on a second tripod.

 

Once the deepsky setup was in place and shooting away its sequence of subs, I had time to capture some nightscapes of the winter scene around me. Shortly before midnight, clouds rolled in and forced me to call it a night.

 

The next morning, while trying to download the deep space subs, I found that my memory card had completely crashed. After attempting to recover the data for almost a day, I finally gave up, writing off the whole deep space sequence.

 

Now I am really glad that I lugged my nightscape gear along. Without it, the night would have been a total failure.
