Night Flight
On a recent flight to Brazil I had almost perfect condotions to shoot the Milky Way from my new working place: the flight deck of a Boeing 777 airliner.
For a flight from Europe to the South Atlantic at this time of the year, the Milky Way is positioned almost exactly in flight direction. The waning moon was rising behind us and although moonlight is considered bad for terrestrial nightscapes, because it makes the sky turn blue and drastically reduces sky contrast, I like it for aerial imaging as it nicely illuminates the clouds below the flightpath.
On the homebound flight there was no moonlight, which helped making the dim Cygnus section of the Milky Way more visible. We passed a very active line of thunderstorms with an amazing display of lightning. After that, you can see the lights from the towns in northern Brazil zipping by and just before heading out into the darkness of the South Atlantic, we passed the huge dome of light pollution produced by the city of Natal.
