Eclipse Frenzy
How can I convey the beauty of the total solar eclipse of August 2017?
I was observing it, together with my friend Eric Gail, from Round Butte Overlook near Madras, Oregon.
Equipment wise, I was well prepared and I also had a plan how to capture the eclipse, but frankly, I was not prepared for the emotions I felt during this incredible event!
I was shooting with 3 cameras:
1. The easiest part was a fully automated time lapse movie, captured with my Canon EOS 7D mk ll.
2. After improvising a holder for my smartphone, I used it to take a movie of the eclipse. Actually, I was not planning to use this footage. I was only trying to catch the soundtrack totality, but the video turned out surprisingly good.
3. For close-up images, I was shooting with my Canon EOS 6D trough a small Megrez 88 refracting scope. This was the though part, as I had only 2 minutes to ramp manually through exposure settings ranging from 1/4000th to 4 seconds and back!
This time lapse is a combination all these data. You'll therefore see me frantically operate my camera, while trying not to miss the eclipse with my naked eyes.
During the totality part, you'll see some close-up images of the different stages and you'll also hear me and Eric shouting and commenting what we see, showing our emotions, while trying to stay focused on our task of operating and clicking away our cameras.
Hope you enjoy!
