Among the Stars

Winter Milky Way over Athens

Night photography out of a fast-moving aircraft poses a special challenge. Astrophotography out of the cockpit is even more difficult, as you have to cope with a notoriously reflecting, thick glass windshield and the movement of the aircraft, which makes long exposures without blurring the stars nearly impossible.

This image is an attempt to achieve the impossible. It was taken out of an Airbus 320 during a very smooth descent into Athens airport and shows the winter Milky Way around the bright stars Sirius and Procyon in the constellations Canis Major and Minor. Due to the huge difference in brightness between the starry sky and the lights in the flight deck, I had to combine two different exposures:

25s @ ISO 6400 for the sky / 2s @ ISO 400 for the flight deck and the ground
