Out of the Fog

This image shows the medieval town and castle of Regensberg with the rising moon on a evening with low lying fog in the valley below. The two trails on the right side are aircraft shooting out of the fog while departing form Zurich airport. In the lower half of the sky, the lights and contrails of three more aircraft cruising high above can be seen. Above all the stars of the constellations Auriga, Taurus, Gemini and Orion were sparkling in the light polluted skies.

It seems many of my fellow photographers are reworking their older images these days. Be it due to bad weather, the wrong season for the Milky Way or whatever - quite a few seem to be lacking good photo opportunities.

So I decided to have some processing fun myself: You cold call this image an extreme HDR, as it is spanning about 14 exposure stops. It is a composite of several exposures taken within a few minutes.

Canon EOS 7D mk ll

Samyang 10mm f/2.8:

- 15s @ ISO800 for the town and sky (single exposure)

- 75s @ISO 800 for the aircraft trails (2 exposures)

Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM @ 70mm:

- 1/320s @ ISO 1600 for the moon

The aim was getting point-like stars, a correctly exposed moon and nice trails from the departing aircraft, while keeping a realistic overall look - quite a challenge..
