Crossing the Dudh Koshi - Overland 1985

Mid October 1985, Mount Everest trek

After weeks of relentless rain, landslides, and flooded trails on the return trek to Kathmandu, the swollen Dudh Khosi had become a bottleneck for everyone fleeing the mountains. Bridges were washed away, and the only way across was a precarious basket suspended on a rope, operated by locals for a fee of 5 rupees. In the pouring rain, trekkers, porters, and villagers alike waited anxiously for their turn, eager to leave behind the hardships of the trail and return to the comforts of Kathmandu. High above, the mountains were buried under fresh snow, while down below, the river roared with the force of the still lingering monsoon.

The picture was originally photographed on Fujichrome slide film with my Nikon FE2 camera and 50mm lens. I photographed the slide by bracketing it with a Nikon D850 camera and enhanced the picture in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Topaz.
