United Colors of Manhattan [explored]

Midtown Manhattan, NY at dusk. This was taken from Brooklyn side of Hudson river, on the evening of the Pope's visit to NYC, during which he addressed the UN assembly (the larger square building on the left side of the frame). Also visible, far left, the Empire State Building; just to the right, the UN building and the Chrysler building. NY was a zoo during the Pope's visit, so I decided to keep to the Long Island side rather than venture in to Manhattan.

This is a 3 exposure merge, longest exposure is approx 2 minutes. the shortest about 30 seconds. I blew the brightest of the lights out a bit, it's rather difficult not to and still get some vibrant colors in the water. I really tried searching for some interesting foreground to use, and there are some along the Brooklyn side of the Hudson, but in the end I decided that the simplicity of the reflected lights looked the best. The Brooklyn Bridge park shot across to Wall Street/lower Manhattan is a bit more photographically interesting because of the old wood pilings there, but I already got that shot last year (flic.kr/p/nEsUcF) so I wanted the midtown shot this time. I *almost* had a great sunset to work with as there was an interesting layer of clouds hanging around just an hour before, but then it all blew away just a few minutes before sunset. C'est la vie! Or, in bronx-ese, Fuhgeddaboutit.
