Shades of Liberty

Statue of Liberty at sunset from the Brooklyn Bridge. This sunset caught me be surprise and so I was not adequately prepared for what could have set up to be a spectacular shot. No doubt the colors here are spectacular but this was an impromptu desperation handheld shot to rescue something from a plan gone awry. I had planned to be down at riverside by sunset, and was thrown off schedule by a massive dance festival and the tribulations of relying on GPS on a smartphone in a city of subways and tall buildings. The quality of the sunset itself was a surprise because the city was entirely clouded over and fogged in until the clouds parted just minutes before sundown, bathing manhattan in fabulous hues of red, orange, yellow and purple. I had intended to be there in the off-chance that some color peeked through, and so it is doubly frustrating that I didn't quite make it. However, this photo turned out to be at least an interesting consolation prize.

I scrambled across the Brooklyn Bridge just as the colors were at max and I realized partway across that I would miss the sunset entirely, so I just found a spot and hauled out my 200mm to catch the silhouette of the statue of liberty and the backdrop of cargo cranes and smokestacks that line the harbor. The shot is not as crisp as I would have liked since I was shooting handheld, out of breath, and working in fading light. I would have also preferred to get the statue closer in frame - really needed my 60-250 lens (or the 300mm), which those of you who follow my stream may remember I broke back in Dec ( >8-< ), and which I am expecting back from repair any day now. Another shot I will have to try to redo some day with the composition I have in mind, though getting close to these color conditions again may prove rather difficult.
